Dread Templar Review: Quake fans rejoice!
(Final judgement at the bottom)
Ah the 90s. When all it took to be cool was to wear a trenchcoat, shoot a couple of pistols and wield katanas. And wouldn't you know it? T19 games happened to make a game with that level of edgelord energy I PINE for.
that game...
Is...
DREAD TEMPLAR
Released on Jan 26th, 2023. Dread templar plays like Quake hopped up on crazy steroids.
The games premise is simple. you, the titular dread templar. Fight demons to avenge the death of your grandfather. But let's be honest in a game like this? the story means shit. what we WANT is the addicting gorefest that made games like quake and doom iconic and dread templar has that in SPADES!

The gameplay's basic movement and controls all feel buttery smooth and responsive, which is essential in these types of games where flicking your crosshair tends to save your ass. The game also comes preloaded with three special abilities.
First, a dash. this dash lets you cover a decent amount of distance in a short time, and has a short cooldown. This can be used to avoid enemies and for platforming.
Second is by pressing Z. You can slow down time for everything except yourself matrix style, that blue meter on the top of the screen being the duration you have.
but third and what I personally consider the best thing ever, is THIS:
if you equip the dual katanas (your melee) you can alt fire to connect them together into a spear and THROW them. That's AWESOME!
Once I found out you could do that I started using it at every opportunity just for the aesthetic, It does loads of damage and pierces enemies. and the sword/spear comes back after a cooldown. though if you have to use melee remember that you need to unlink your swords because they stay linked like that which means if you try to Attack with your swords normally you can just throw them away and get stuck with your fists.
Dread Templar as well has an upgrade system. you can find runes scattered around the levels along with blood crystals which let you unlock the slots to use said runes to make your weapons do more damage, carry more ammo, Etc. A lot of these runes and crystals are hidden in secret areas which encourages exploration.
Speaking of secret areas Dread templars secrets can range from simple areas obscured from view:
to a proper puzzle, like this Puzzle involving these blueprints as the code to a hidden lock, the secret I'll keep to myself to give you my dear reader some incentive to play
Overall, Dread templar is a fantastic game and a worthy homage to Quake style FPS games that I would recommend to just about anyone.
my final judgement: 9/10
